Yes you should install it; Windows Defender is very good active (full time) spyware protection.

In addition to a active spyware protection you must have full time (active) virus protection and a firewall.

All the following programs are free.
--------------------------------------…
Full Time (Active) Virus Protection
If you do not have active virus protection, install only one. All are excellent.

AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista

or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista

or
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista

--------------------------------------…
Full Time (Active) spyware protection and run a full scan.
If you do not have active spyware protection, install:

Windows Defender (Included with Vista) XP SP2, Vista

--------------------------------------…
Install the following four programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all four. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection. They will greatly increase your protection. Install and run now.

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.

You can try this freeware but is not really the best, give it a try!

Besides W. Defender i would not recommend any other.
i say you should try everything once. they usually give u 30 days trial period. use up all those trial period, then move on to the free ones.
sure why not its fee and it works ..can try windows live one care free for 90 days ...has firewall spy/antivirus ...back up etc ...just type in windows live one care ...
yes.you should download.it's very good
you can try using it so you yourself could prove the stability of the software, but i dont use it yet though i have save a copy of installer..

i am using the latest AVG from it is good..but the one with "S" in the logo is somewhat expiring with the use, its only free for 30 days..im using now spyware terminator..as far as i am using it, i found out that it is the combination of two software in credibility: spybot kill & destroy and AVG.

try spyware terminator. also in filehippo..IT IS GENUINELY FREEware
